PAVA Meeting Minutes
October 15, 2008 7:00-9:00 pm

Presentation by Michele Tuegel of the Pinellas County Cultural Affairs Department, and Barbara Hubbard about judging, framing and photographing artwork.

Michele handed out information from the Cultural Affairs Dept. including Public Art - locations in the county, and a Cultural Map - giving the types of festivals and events. The Cultural Affirs Dept. also promotes the "Artist" license plate, $20, which goes straight to the Dept. The Department gives out artist grants to give artists a boost. Go to www.pinellasarts.org for information. Michele then talked about the 5 types of juried situations: outdoor shows, exhibitions, grants, curator, public art. She spoke about what judges are looking for and emphasized that the final presentation is important, for example, using white mats, no giclees, not under non-glare glass.

Barbara will be the judge for the upcoming Art Harvest. She said that artists must make sure they are sending quality photos and slides. Now most must be in digital format. Photos should be cropped so just the image shows. The photo can be corrected to look like the art work, but not changed to look different than the actual work. The body of work needs to be consistent; work can be unified by using same frames and mats. Presentation is everything - use same backgrounds and make sure slides are presented all vertically or horizontally. Also make sure booth slide is good.

Discussion followed about originals and giclees, caliber of juried-in work and what kind of work really makes up up most of booth.

Meeting adjourned.

Respectfully submitted,
Jenna Star Friedman
